This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Over the last ten years of being a teacher, I've learned that kids actually do love to read... Most of them just need a little guidance on finding the right book. Opening the door to new worlds (and words) for students who say, "I hate reading!" is one of my favorite things about being a teacher. I've found that when I order books that are more representative of my classroom environment, less kids say that dreaded phrase.

Providing the space and place for students to get lost in a book where they feel seen, heard, and appreciated is so rewarding.

That's what these books are for -- allowing all kinds of voices, worlds, situations, and experiences to be visible and available for all students.

Many of these books are from our district's summer reading list. There's no better way to spend a summer than lounging with a good book! Encouraging students to choose books they're interested in is the only way students learn to love reading. When a person feels like their experience matters, and they see it reflected in a book - it's only natural that they'll want to continue that journey!
