Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low socioeconomic area in my district. Even though there are some struggles at school and at home, they come to school ready to learn. For many, school is their favorite place and a place they feel cared for and safe.

Every morning when school starts we go around the room and all students have an opportunity to check-in.

When they check-in, they tell the class how they're feeling that day on a scale from 1-5. For many, this is an opportunity to share how they are feeling and why. They love just knowing I care and their classmates care as well.

My students know I am their biggest cheerleader. When they know I care about them, they want to work even harder and persevere even through the hardest task.

My Project

I am hoping to fill my classroom library with more diverse books. I teach in a lower socioeconomic community, so my students will benefit from hearing stories that might just be about them. Making personal connections is important with literature.

The stories I selected will also lead to great writing responses because most students will be able to relate to the topics.

The students will be able to make text to self connections because of the diverse nature of the stories. And of course learning about important people in history is just as important.
