My Students

I teach a diverse and energetic group of 8th graders who thrive on engaging, visual, hands-on and meaningful learning activities. They love listening to music, playing games, and collaborating with each other. They care about equity, their identity, and sharing ideas. While they are eager to write about their experiences and share their opinions, they often struggle to find a book they can connect with and that they want to finish. My passion is to help students find books that act as both mirrors of themselves and windows into other worlds. This is how students can explore the world and also gain confidence in their own abilities.

Imagine watching a lively, loud group of students rush into your classroom, and you hear someone shout, "Do we get to read our books today?" They grab their books off the shelf, and in the blink of an eye, every last one of them has their nose in a book, devouring the story in front of them.

I've seen this happen, but only when they truly connect to the characters in the books they are reading.

My Project

This collection of diverse books will appeal to my diverse students, helping them to see themselves in their books, and also to get a glimpse of worlds they don't know. Every day, students read a book of their choice for 15 minutes in my classroom. It is my passion to help students find books they can't stop reading. Yet many of my students are reluctant readers; they struggle to find books that they want to read, and often they abandon books quickly.

The books that have characters they can relate to and stories they can connect with are the books my students can't stop reading.

When I hear a magical conversation between students where a student says, "You've got to read this one; it is so good!", I am eager to find more just like it. The diverse books this project will provide will make sure that students have easy access to stories with characters who are dealing with the same problems, emotions, and situations that my students deal with.

When students see themselves in what they read, and when they can experience unfamiliar situations through a story, they are more equipped to deal with the craziness of life as a young teen.
