Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are extraordinary scholars. They are strong believers in equity and push for change continuously. They question and challenge consistently.

My students are fearless, independent, and leaders for change.

The school serves students of color. Additionally, it provides free breakfast and lunch everyday. As the city they live in grows to be more expensive, many of the students are between homes or homeless. Regardless, they believe in the best of the world and want to make it a better place.

My Project

We need diverse and engaging books for small group literary circles. Our titles include Everything I Never Told You, Watched, The Skin I'm In and more. My students do not have much choice in what books they read. Part of this unit is creating autonomy within my classroom to spark a fire for reading before entering high school. My classroom has a wide range of reading levels from third grade to ninth. Therefore, these books are all at different reading levels to ensure that each student can immerse themselves with the text.

These books are diverse and reflect different pieces of who they are.

These books will also allow students to annotate with post-its. Since every class shares books with another period students cannot annotate or even take the book outside of the classroom. These books will allow students to have a sense of ownership and reflect on their notes. This unit is set to engage the students with the text, connect it to who they are, and society around them. Each book will only have six students to ensure that they can have productive and meaningful discussions.
