I teach in a self contained Special Education Focus program. The students in the program have severe developmental disabilities or multiple disabilities. The school is also a Title I school, meaning that the majority of the students in the school come from low-income households.
Teaching the students is truly remarkable and rewarding every day.
Each student has their own unique strengths, interests, and needs.
Most of the students are non-verbal. Some students use personal communication devices, Picture Exchange Systems, a few verbalizations, or other augmentative communication devices. Some students are mobile, while others are not. No one day is the same and the need for flexibility and creativity is a constant.
My Project
Representation is a key factor and important for all children. I want to make sure that the students in my classroom have as many opportunities to see themselves represented as any other student would have.
This project and these books will help me provide and supply books that are diverse and inclusive in my classroom.
Books are just one way for students to see themselves, as well as learn about others who may be different in one way or another from them.
This project will hopefully be a starting point in a continuous journey to build my diverse and inclusive classroom library.
