Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am currently a 3rd/4th Grade Self-Contained Special Education teacher in a public elementary school in the South Bronx, where 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 30% of our students live in temporary housing. My class consists of 12 amazing students who are compassionate, enthusiastic, and have a great love for learning! As struggling learners, my students have disabilities ranging from Learning Disabilities to Autism and with reading levels ranging from Kindergarten to 2nd Grade.

Our school is in the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate World School, the only public elementary school in NYC!

Before our school opened in 2013, the previous school was a failing school. Since our opening, our school has been committed to the success of our students and the growth of our surrounding community. Now as one of the top-performing schools in our district, our school provides rigorous academics, committed teachers, and a safe learning environment. As we are continuing in our journey through the International Baccalaureate framework, we are committed to using authentic literature that allows our students to develop a global mindset and make an impact on their local, national, and global community.

My Project

As a first-year teacher, I am building a classroom library from the ground up. Having a class with various learning needs, I hope to build a diverse classroom library that is reflective of my students’ learning abilities and interests. With a lack of access to books in their communities, my students always look forward to reading in the classroom and often choose to spend their free time engaging in independent reading. This library will help us do research, explore new topics, or even just unwind with an interesting book after working hard all day.

I want to ensure that my students have the necessary literacy resources to receive an equitable education that meets each of their unique learning needs.

While my students continue to grow academically each day, our school and families are limited by the resources available to help them further grow. By donating to this project, you will be helping my students strengthen their love of literature by providing them with literacy materials adapted to their specific learning needs as well as providing them with learning experiences that they will use to grow as lifelong learners.
