Many of my 9th grade students came in this year claiming they are not readers. They were definitely reluctant, and were not used to having the opportunity to choose what they read. They have discovered through independent reading and choice that they are readers.
Some have even admitted they have read their first book from beginning to end this year.
My students are considered at-risk, and struggle with reading, but they are eager to try and take chances, and they are always willing to talk about the next book they want to read, or the book they've just started reading.
My Project
My students started the year openly admitting they were not readers With the small classroom library I have started to develop and the help of our school librarian, I began matching the right book with the right student. Realizing that when students see themselves in books they are more eager to read and become involved in the narrative. Now, in February, I have self-proclaimed readers. I have chosen YA novels that address topics of race, gender, poverty, sexuality, - novels I know my students will be able to relate too and will continue building a class and school culture of readers.
