Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I grew up in the same neighborhood as my students and continue to live here. I have known since I was a child that I wanted to teach. Second grade was my favorite grade, and I am so happy to be a second grade teacher!
I have a group of second graders who come from different economic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.
I teach bilingual Spanish and ESL, so we are lucky enough to be a very diverse classroom. I love all my wonderful students!
Second grade is a special grade since students are still learning about themselves, but they are beginning to develop very mature skills such as empathy and personal responsibility. They also enjoy things like Finding Nemo but are well-versed in sports trivia. My class is comprised of an interesting bunch that brings me a ton of joy. My students are growing before my eyes, and every day brings new challenges for us all!
My Project
I would like to add books to my classroom library that show my students different world views and encourage them to think critically about historical events. I have included retellings of fairy tales from around the world in this list because my students come from different backgrounds and they should see their cultures represented in the books they read. My students can also learn about other cultures and gain respect for them by reading books where the main character comes from a different background.
I have also included books that focus on social justice to provoke discussions about events and issues that are relevant to my students' lives.
Although my students are only in second grade, there are many concepts they understand very well. For example, the Civil Rights Movement still affects our lives today and my students should have the opportunity to read about it on their own. I often tell my students that they need to learn about history so that we as a society can keep moving forward.
I believe that teaching children tolerance from a young age encourages them to be good citizens and opens up their minds so that they are compassionate and loving for life.
