Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am currently expanding my knowledge by taking a class on children literature and diversity. When children can see themselves in the books they read it helps them to develop their identity, feel connected to their culture, and improve motivation to read. My classroom library currently contains some some non-fiction books and some novels, but they are old and do not contain diverse characters. I am hoping to create a library with high interest books and diversity. This project aims to add diverse nonfiction and novels to the mix. The books include biographies and novels about Latinx, Asian, Black, and Native American, transgender, Jewish, and Biracial people as well as topics such as resilience, using failure and setbacks to motivate, and banning books. With a president who is bent on ignoring diversity and getting rid of efforts to address inclusion, my diverse students need reenforcement that they are good enough and can do anything they set their minds to despite the obstacles that might be in their way.
