My Students

My students are incoming Pre-K students in a Title I-funded school in the South Bronx. Many of them speak a language other than English and I try to use their language knowledge to build a community of diverse learners. Pre-K is their first introduction to the world of school and I can't wait to show them all it has to offer!

My Project

"If we don’t give children books that are literary mirrors as well as windows to the whole world of possibility, if these books don’t give them the opportunity to see outside themselves, then how can we expect them to grow into adults who connect in meaningful ways to a global community, to people who might look or live differently than they. You cannot." -Kwame Alexander

As described above, my students come from a diverse background and our classroom library should represent that.

In this project you will see a variety of multicultural books that will be used when discussing our interdisciplinary units of study (e.g., Bilal Cooks Daal and Everybody Cooks Rice while discussing our five senses, The Name Jar and Islandborn when discussing all about us), as well as stories to learn about holiday celebrations and customs (e.g., 'Twas Nochebuena, Binny's Diwali).
