My Project

In my K–8 art room, bilingual and SEL (Social Emotional Learning) books are essential tools that support both creative growth and whole-child development. These books help create an inclusive classroom where all students—especially multilingual learners—feel represented and supported. Bilingual texts are especially important as they help support our growing ESL student population, making sure language is not a barrier to participation or expression. They also open doors to diverse voices and perspectives, allowing students to see themselves and others reflected in the stories we explore. This not only supports language development but also enriches our understanding of different cultures through art.

SEL books play a central role in my teaching style and classroom management.

They provide meaningful ways for students to explore emotions, develop empathy, and strengthen social awareness—skills that naturally complement the creative process. I use these books to introduce class discussions, spark art projects, and guide mindful moments. They also offer a calming, constructive break for students who may need space to self-regulate, reflect, or reset during the day.

Together, bilingual and SEL books help me build a safe, welcoming art room where students feel empowered to express themselves, connect with others, and grow—both as artists and as people.
