My Students

My 5th grade students are engaging, voracious readers who love to ask questions, and "dive deep" into topics. One small detail in a text can become a 40 minute conversation about the world around us.

A goal for my students is for them to become lifelong readers, learners and change makers.

Reading books about Mae C. Jemison, Arturo Schomburg, Philip Freelon, will give them the opportunity to dream beyond their wildest dreams. I encourage them to read outside their comfort zone, to help shape their knowledge of the world and become global citizens. Students in my class are inquisitive, open-minded, and inspiring. As a result, they challenge me to find ways to bring the world into the classroom through quality texts. Who doesn't want to read a book entitled "Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You", written by Sonia Sotomayor. Together we are shaping the next generation of thinkers, policy makers, scientists, engineers, teachers, and innovators.

My Project

Have you ever read a book and the whole time you were saying, "That's me...this is my life"? I want my students to have that same reaction. I want them to see themselves reflected in the pages of great literature. I want them to feel empowered and that that their voices and stories matter.

Reading incredible books where students see themselves reflected in the pages helps "hook" more students to read.

This leads students to become lifelong readers and changemakers. The books selected in this project will help me create a more diverse classroom library where every student can see themselves. Some books will be used as classroom read alouds so we can engage in deeper, significant conversations about the world around us. Other books will be used in book clubs to enable students to dive deeper into meaningful, relevant texts. Many of the books selected have won numerous prestigious awards such as Coretta Scott King Author Award, Newbery Award , National Book Award , to name just a few. Many of these titles were taken from Schomburg's Black Liberation List for Young Readers as well as recommendations from other teachers, readers and friends.

These are unprecedented times we are living through. Many children want to escape their reality. Other students what to find new heroes to emulate, others still want to hear the struggle of others and decide how to help. What better way than through the pages of incredible stories.
