My Students

As a teacher working in a high poverty area, my students are constantly faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. They are subjected to many high risk obstacles that can bring many emotions. Despite their many challenges, I am trying to provide my students with a safe and welcoming space. A space where they are free to learn, grow, create and imagine.

My students have the potential to be creators, inventors and much more.

The students all receive free lunch based on the socioeconomic standings of this city. The school has about eight hundred students and of those students, most come from single parent households, poverty and/or shelter homes. Such difficulties may prevent them from getting ahead in life and progressing to their full potential. Entering my classroom, I focus on who they are and not their challenges. From the moment they walk into the room until the moment they leave, I want to create a positive room that inspires the students to grow, excel and imagine.

My Project

Given the inner city location of my school, some families are not able to purchase high quality children's books for their learners. I would like to connect my students to characters, stories and challenges that they can relate to.

When students read and look at books with characters who look like themselves, they feel valued and seen.

Many of the books in my library were donated and although there are many great books, they lack diverse characters. Giving children more books opens endless possibilities for the young child's mind by relating it to who they are and empowering them.
