Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a first year teacher, teaching 32 ENL students. I teach Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. My students are curious little people that enjoy readings stories to find answers to their questions. They come from different backgrounds and bring their unique funds of knowledge to the classroom. Throughout the school year, we learn about science and social studies topics that help develop language in four modalities: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. We follow an ENL curriculum where students deep dive into a topic and practice skills in all four of those modalities. For example, students in second grade complete a unit on space, where they learn about the first astronauts and the developments in space technology over time.

While the students love our curriculum, they need interesting and engaging books to help access the content in a meaningful way.

Therefore, I have come up with a list of books for my students in every topic that we cover throughout the year. With these books, I hope that my students can apply new vocabulary, learn new vocabulary, and make connections between fiction and non-fiction texts. As most of my students struggle with reading and reading comprehension, the books will give them extra practice in decoding, phonics, and with answering comprehension questions. Although not all of my students will be able to read all of the books, it makes for an engaging experience to discuss with a friend.
