Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second grade students are one of a kind. Each one enters my room coming from many different backgrounds and ethnicities which adds to my melting pot of a classroom. These are the kids that if you look them in their eyes, you have no idea what they just came from or had to experience before they reached my classroom door. Yet, despite the challenges they are up against, they show up every day, with a smile across their face and eager, ready and willing to learn! They ask questions, they challenge theories, and they want answers! They are creative thinkers who, when given the opportunity, will take the ball and run with it. My second graders are the CEOs, entrepreneurs, inventors, and scientists of the future!

My Project

These treasures will open a whole new world for my students. These books are windows and mirrors for my young scholars. They will give them the opportunity to see themselves, and others in the stories. Many of my young students were never exposed to their own cultural heritage in the books available to them previously. In addition, these books would create a culturally responsive classroom that acknowledges and appreciates my student's home cultures. My students can benefit from reading these masterpieces because they build upon the uses of language and literacy with which my children are already familiar with from home.
