Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's 8:25 and the students of 2-401 are buzzing around the classroom, getting ready for an exciting day ahead. The energy and excitement for the day ahead is palpable.

Our class is made up of 30 second graders who, above all else, love learning.

Whether it be reading, math, writing, social studies, or science, my students are ready to absorb and analyze new information. They learn mostly from one another as diversity permeates our classroom. This is evidenced by both by the cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds of the students as well as their unique interests.

My Project

As per our school's literacy curriculum, second grade completes a unit of study on biographies. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to not only learn about the technical elements of biographies - text features, writing style, etc. - but also to read about trailblazers that revolutionized their respective fields. The biographies available at our school are a wonderful starting point - highlighting individuals like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. However, in addition to not being challenging enough for the students, these texts are not reflective of the diverse interests and backgrounds of the students.

Books can be powerful tools, serving as windows to the worlds of others and mirrors, reflective of students' identities and experiences.

The comprehensive list of biographies featured on this list underscore the accomplishments of activists, authors, artists, athletes, mathematicians, politicians, and scientists that come from diverse backgrounds. People of color, women, individuals with disabilities, and figures who have overcome great adversity fill the pages of these biographies. These amazing individuals and their stories have the power to engage and inspire my students.
