My Students

Young high school students often struggle with the idea of identity in an effort to fit in and be accepted by their peers. The theme of my tenth grade English curriculum is cultural identity, and students read a number of short stories that fit this theme. What's missing is a novel!

My tenth grade students are struggling learners, and many of them read below grade level.

Because of their struggles, most students do not read as a hobby outside of school. Many of these students also come from low income families and need to work after school or provide child care for their younger siblings.

My Project

We will use Divergent to do a class book study that focuses on culture and identity. Divergent is a high interest novel that will hook students and keep them engaged. Even students uninterested in reading won't be able to resist this novel! The audio book will also be a valuable resource to aide students with low reading levels.

This novel may be the only one these students will read all school year.

Reading novels is incredibly important for students struggling with vocabulary and comprehension. This book also has the potential to get students excited about reading! If they enjoy this book, they may even read the rest of the series on their own!
