My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. We have over 5 cultures represented in our class and three different home languages spoken. My students come from working class families where most parents work full time out of necessity.

Even though my class is filled with students with a range of reading levels, they all have one thing in common, gaining new knowledge.

They love to read stories and listen to stories. They're always asking when we're going to go to the library, can they write me a story or asking when I am going to finish the read-aloud. They also look forward to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities. They love making connections to our projects to real world experiences and technology.

My Project

Whether in the classroom or learning remotely from home, my students need diverse books. My school is a very diverse school with over 7 different cultures represented. Students need to see themselves in the literature they read. When students see themselves and their community in what they are learning they are more likely to be engaged in their learning.

In the classroom books such as My Name is Yoon will be used during interactive read alouds and during students' independent reading time.

During distance learning students will engage in interactive read alouds with books displayed under the document camera.
