I love teaching seventh grade. My students are energetic, curious, and hilarious at times. A lot of them are also developing and going through change as they start middle school. Many of them enjoy being able to incorporate movement into their learning. Last year, during class discussions, videos, and independent work time, I noticed many of my students using their own fidget toys to help them focus. Some examples were spinners, putty, small plastic figures, mini skateboards, etc. For some, it helped. For others, it was frustrating not having access to them. For me, I noticed it was often distracting as students would draw more attention to themselves with the toys rather than focusing on the task at hand.
I want my classroom to be more accessible for my students that fidget, and distraction free by eliminating toys coming from home.
The collapsible phone grips I have requested for this project will be put onto the surface of each desk in my classroom. After each class, the grips will be sanitized. Each student will have access to a fidget, regardless of accessibility at home. They will all be the same, so students won't be tempted to distract and share their fidget with others. Lastly, students who really find fidgeting helpful will be able to do so naturally, without questions from me or other students because their desks will be built with that accommodation ready for them to use.
