Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special education students from diverse low economic backgrounds and most are English language learners. They entered our Middle School in September with low expectations for themselves and poor attitudes about learning but throughout the year have made a 180 in their interpersonal relationships, academic achievements, increase in curiosity in academic content, personal responsibility, and enthusiastic outlook on school life. They've come so far in just a few months!

Help keep up my student's thirst for learning and engaging with their peers as they remain isolated in their homes in Jamaica, Queens for the rest of the school year.

My students struggle with reading and writing, with most reading 3 or more grade levels below where they should be. Their families have limited finances and resources, and many caretakers at our school have lost jobs and family members!

Due to COVID19 school closings, my students are struggling with learning new technology, reading on their own, and needing to share technology with other siblings and parents working remotely. I have been using online interactive platforms for students to learn by reading, writing, watching videos, and pictures. They lack the physical materials they were able to access at school.

My Project

Our school building in New York City has been closed for the remainder of the school year due to the COVID19 pandemic. The materials in this care packet will help students maintain a sense of normalcy in these uncertain times.

I hope to enrich their at-home-learning by providing them with the school supplies (such as notebooks, marker boards, and calculators) they rely on which have been left behind in the classroom when we closed unexpectedly.

With this kit, they will have the ability to make their thinking visible and practice their reading and writing skills to get them on grade level.

The items in this project will help students stay engaged in learning and help them to make real world connections to current events to live our class motto "Knowledge is Power!" They will have a place to keep their work organized as they follow along with our student paced Nearpod lessons and Google Meets guiding lessons. They will be able to learn about how we are interconnected as a country and as global citizens with their US and world maps. They can create their own plant and animal cells for tactile science learners to make abstract concepts tangible.
