Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my preschool for all learners class, we work with three to five-year-old children of varying ability levels with IEPs. During our daily routines, we have teacher-led group activities and child-directed free choice play experiences that are individualized to each student’s abilities and needs.

My students come from low-income households and a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

My students love hands-on material and visuals that inspire learning and curiosity. They are very creative, fun-loving, and enthusiastic learners. Unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult to provide them with all the help and material they need because of a lack of resources at home and in the classroom. In March of 2020, our District went to distance learning, and students and their families struggled to maintain their learning environment without the proper resources commonly found in the classroom.

My Project

As you all know we will be starting the new school year online. Unfortunately, most of the families I work with do not have the resources at home to help their children succeed and complete play-based projects. Distance learning has brought many challenges for all my students. Their parents have had to face a daily range of challenges due to their disabilities as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenges they face daily range from getting their child to connect online to completing hands-on activities with their children among many other factors. Although they have many challenges they have been great sports and they cooperate and support their children as much as possible.

The access to art supplies, glue sticks, scissors, wiggly eyes, construction papers, playdough, and ready for preschool backpack sets will allow my students to engage with material that they would typically have at school.

Many of my students are returning to my classroom to complete their second year of preschool therefore the supplies will also help make their learning more exciting. My students will have the opportunity to engage with material that they are familiar with and it will help them feel connected to our classroom. My students are surrounded by high poverty, yet with the help of their families, they strive to achieve their academic goals and to do their best at all times. I want to ensure that my students get the best support while we continue their education through distance learning.
