Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I will be working with are first grade students who live in the West Bronx/Tremont area in the Bronx. This neighborhood is an urban neighborhood that is diverse in its demographics. Most of the students are from low income households.

The children are part of the Horizon program, which is tailored to serve children on the autism spectrum.

Our goal is to create an environment for the students in which they feel safe and respected. Establishing routines is a very important part of the Horizon curriculum. Visuals are very important when communicating expectations, teaching new strategies and learning social skills.

My Project

Students with Special Needs require multiple modalities to learn. For fully remote students, screen time is already excessive. Therefore, last Spring I began to send students packages in the mail with printed material they were able to write on using writing tools. This also helped them strengthen their fine motor skills.

Parents who had difficulty with technology were also relieved because they could have the students complete projects and assignments using traditional materials.

They would simply provide me with pictures of the work that was completed. This project will help me continue to provide this to the students this school year.
