This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My AP Environmental students live in the South Bronx, one of the nation's poorest congressional districts. They have very limited access to outdoor green space, while at the same time experiencing some of the worst health outcomes caused be pollution. They are such inquisitive learners, and AP Environmental Science is a place for them to get exposed to the natural world outside of NYC while also learning about and developing solutions to local environmental problems that directly affect their health and well-being.

My Project

In order to create more real-world experiences for my AP Environmental students, I have flipped my classroom for the first time, meaning students will learn much of the new content at home (using videos I've created). This will free up a majority of class time for labs and activities to get them more engaged and working on solutions to real-world environmental problems in their community.

Dissolved oxygen probes will be be used to monitor water quality in student-created eco-columns, hydroponic gardening systems, and wastewater treatment plants, as well as water samples from the Bronx River.

A big focus in my class will be on experimental design, and the probes will allow them design, test, and modify their solutions to environmental problems in the classroom even with limited access to the outdoors.
