My Students

Hands-on science has already changed my students' lives, and they need more of it! My students are behind in reading and writing, and interactive science allows them to learn and thrive like I've never seen. Please help me continue to help them learn and achieve.

My students are incredible, and they have been through so much.

Following Katrina, my students (already behind) have a lot of catching-up to do, especially in science. They attend a charter school in Louisiana with extremely limited funding for science equipment. This year especially has been tighter than before, and while I was able to get sheep hearts for my 7th graders last year, there is no money to do the same for this year. I had hospital equipment (seen in the photograph) donated, and my students still talk about how incredible an experience it was to dissect a heart. This has inspired me to continue to keep science as interactive as possible for them, but I can't do it by myself. Allowing my kids opportunities to dissect animals, raise butterflies, or interact with the rocks and minerals we're learning about lets me teach them better and helps them to learn better. My kids have rough home lives, and their behavior is much improved when they are engaged and interested.

My Project

My students need materials to make science interactive: dissections and microscopes for Seventh Grade Life Science and collected minerals and fossils for Eighth Grade Earth Science! I've already seen how having something to dissect, touch, and feel can change how my students learn and behave. I tailored my instruction for the sheep heart dissection to build up their interest over the course of the week. Having laboratory activities for my students to do keeps them motivated and interested in the task at hand. The interaction between students during the dissection was heart-warming. My tough kids spoke to each other with science vocabulary and were polite and respectful. I want to continue to facilitate that this year, with more hands on opportunities. Seventh Graders will look at cells through microscopes, dissect hearts, fetal pigs, and raise butterflies to learn about metamorphosis, and Eighth Graders will collect fossils, scratch minerals for the Mohs test, and learn about the rock cycle through interactive displays. They will touch and feel the science that we discuss as a class.

With so little science background in elementary school, my students came into last year with low expectations for my science class.

Through engaging them with interactive activities, I have seen their whole outlook change. They tell me that they want to be scientists, researchers, and cardiovascular surgeons. Please help me continue to inspire their love of science. Doing so will help keep them in school and motivated to further their education.
