My Students

My students are mostly low income and our school is one of the most culturally diverse in the city of Philadelphia. We are a melting pot of different languages, religions etc...

What makes my students special is that most of them are going to be the first generation in their families to attend college.

Their parents are working two jobs in some cases to make a better life for their kids. My students represent not only their dreams but the dreams of their parents.

My Project

For many of my students, the laboratory setting has been taught in a conceptual way. They learn about things like dissections through images in a book. This project will allow my students to have authentic lab experiences. They will get to dissect organisms like fetal pigs, perform genetic crosses with live organisms (fruit flies), study animal behavior with live organisms (pill bugs) and more.

Our school has no budget for science supplies and so I have relied on DonorsChoose for the past four years to be able to provide my students with a laboratory experience that will match other well funded schools in the suburbs.

There is no substitute for authentic laboratory experiences. Over the past few years, the supplies I have received from Donorschoose have given so many students the chance to enter college on par with their peers.
