Dissections For Future Doctors

My students need specimens like fetal pigs and frogs, along with the necessary tools for dissection, such as scalpels and gloves, to be able to have an authentic dissection opportunity.

My Students

"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom" -Viktor E. Frankl I tell my students everyday that they get to make choices, and those choices impact their lives.

My students are all from low income families.

Our school attracts students from distances, that require some kids to take 3 different buses and travel for 90 minutes. I am in constant awe of their resilience and fortitude. I have the privilege of teaching kids that see education as a gift. It is the great equalizer, that will secure a better future for them and their families. They work extremely hard in my AP biology class, as they are continually challenged with the depth and breadth of the material. Instead of giving up, they embrace these challenges, and welcome the opportunity to prepare for the demands of college in the near future. These kids have kept their eye on the prize for years, turning quality work in, sacrificing social opportunities, working outside of school to help support their families, to ultimately get to college and be successful. Our school is a heterogeneous mix of just about every culture one can think of. We have it all.

My Project

Last year was my first year teaching AP biology. I was extremely excited about this new endeavor, and as the year progressed, it became evident that if I did not reach out, for outside funding, we would not be able to do many of hands on activities students in other districts take for granted. We have no money. I was thrilled when my "dissection for future doctors" project got funded last year. I wish you could of been there! Dissecting the fetal pigs was a highlight of our year. My students completely immersed themselves in the experience. It was the first and only dissection for most of them. Other students, outside of our class, asked to sit in, so that they too could experience the wonders of the inner workings of a mammal. It completely exceeded my expectations. Everyday we would chronicle our dissection, and post pictures for the class to see on Schoology. If we are fortunate to get funded again, it will be the most memorable experience I can help provide for them.

The reputation that was fostered through the amazing hands on activities I was able to provide, because of DonorsChoose, has attracted many students to take AP biology this year.

These kinds of experiences, enable my students to enter a laboratory classroom in college, as equals to their peers. It will give them the confidence to succeed, because of their experience, and for some it could be the beginning of a career in the medical field. "Dissections for Future Doctors" is true to it's name.
