My Students

How did you learn best? Reading? Seeing? Doing? Many students are unable to fully grasp scientific concepts of anatomy without being able to have a Hands-On experience that comes through classroom dissections.

I work in a low-income, high needs school in SW Florida.

My students enjoy the one dissection we currently are able to provide for them due to funding. They are inquisitive and want to learn more, but many are unable to concentrate and focus on lecture style teaching. In order to be able to teach to the best of my ability for my students, Hands on learning experiences are the direction in which I am currently looking.

My Project

I am requesting 4 different organisms (squid, crayfish, clam, and grasshopper) in order to supply my students with a variety of organisms to look at. Some of these organisms the students may not have ever seen before. Students will gain through these activities, hands-on interactions with organisms and skill-building working in groups. The students will also be learning about the organs and organ systems for those organisms as well. Students will also gain experience with hands-on lab techniques and lab safety that will benefit them throughout high-school and college, but also will develop inquiry and question making skills that will benefit them for a LIFETIME.

Science is becoming a subject that kids dread.

Because of the lack of funding, we are unable to offer our students the "cool" lab experiments and dissections that we so fondly remember from our school days. In my opinion without the opportunity for kids to be able to practice science, they will never be able to fully appreciate nor understand the concepts being presented.
