My Project

My students hail from every borough of NYC and all reach my school because they have a talent in an art - dance, music, art, theater. They are a diverse and creative crew. We know how important representation is in books and media. I want to add displays of diverse books to our library space. These materials will help me highlight authors, stories, and work by individuals of different backgrounds throughout the library.

Imagine an array of books by Black authors, artists, dancers, singers, and playwrights during Black History Month, or a panoply of titles and tomes by LGBTQ+ authors and artists in June.

Seeing their own identities highlighted in their school will validate the varied identities of my students.

Not only will the display materials help students feel seen, but they will call attention to books and resources in our library that they might not come upon. This rotating display will create a more accessible and enticing entry point for my kids.
