My Students

Our school is in desperate need of a make over and a change in attitude and one easy way that we can accomplish this is to implement a successful recycling program. Our school has not been recycling any materials and sends everything into the trash.

My students are eager to pitch in to make the world a better place but need an outlet to do so.

The students are also such an exceptionally bright bunch that they need extra enrichment to help them reach their full potential. The Disney Planet Challenge seemed like an excellent project to help out on both counts. We will improve the environment at our school and reduce waste, while giving the students experience organizing an online portfolio and becoming a leader at their school and in the community.

My Project

In class we analyzed what could we implement to help a recycling program at our school and how could we make it as far reaching as possible. At the moment, we are already recycling paper, cardboard, milk cartons, styrofoam, cans, bottles and so forth, but we decided to take it a step beyond. In the cafeteria everyday a great deal of food goes to waste and how could we recycle this instead. The idea of developing a composting plan was developed to take the vegetarian waste from the cafeteria and compost right here at school. Then we will distribute our compost to the community and also a possible garden right here at the school. We would like to obtain a composting bin to place in the cafeteria for food waste and a large spinning compost bin to place the materials to be composted. We also need basic supplies like gloves and goggles to handle the food waste.

Our school is in a very low income area of Los Angeles, where recycling rates are very low.

It is important to inform the students of the school about recycling so we can teach habits that will hopefully stay with them into adulthood. The Disney Planet Challenge allows our students to introduce good practices at our school that will continue beyond this school year and into the future as we can keep our recycling program viable.
