Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being in a Title 1 school, all my students are underprivileged and come from low income homes and they don't come to school with needed supplies. The school district cuts have been tremendous this year and we have little to no supplies.

My students are an enthusiastic group of fourth graders.

They live in a very poverty struck area but still come to school with a positive attitude to learn. Our classroom has become more of a family where the students feel comfortable with each other and feel safe there.

My Project

I need to engage my students with non fiction books and materials. By having access to a yearly subscription to Scholastic News and Science Spin, this will open up my students eyes to current events and the world around them! We can then use the non fiction comprehension cards to check for understanding of the texts. Students will be given copies of comprehension questions which is what the copy paper will be used for. It is crucial that we expose students to nonfiction texts as often as possible. Nonfiction texts allow children to experience the wonder of the world. Facts come alive when books about animals, people, or objects are read to children.

If I were able to have more non fiction literacy materials in my classroom it would help them become proficient readers.

Using nonfiction texts allows to build on children's interests and increase vocabulary and background knowledge. When students become proficient readers of nonfiction texts, we help them become successful at school and in the "real world."
