My Students

My students have a goal to be independent learners by the end of second grade. Through working together and exploring concepts my students will be self-motivated and strong readers by the end of second grade.

I have a class of 17 active second graders that love playing games.

In my classroom the main focus is learning with a twist of fun. With a focus on student self-motivation, whole group teaching time is minimal, and students use a majority of their time exploring and discovering concepts in small groups. If I have to make the games myself my students always have a new game to play relating to the skill/s being taught. My students also love stories of all kinds, especially nonfiction. They are highly interested in learning about things that happen in real life and to real people. Most recently we have been discovering biographies and the students are loving every minute of it. My students love learning about the world around them and nonfiction stories help them achieve this.

My Project

With a focus on self-motivation and independence my students will be able to explore new concepts with fun center games. They will be able to use what they have learned from whole group lessons and practice using these skills with their peers. Students will work together to complete tasks explaining games building their independence while at the same time having fun. In doing this students learn that school can be fun! My students will also be able to read nonfiction stories at their own level. Students will be able to explore various topics through the nonfiction readers. Independently choosing a topic makes their reading more meaningful. Students will be able to research various topics and compare and share what they have learned with their peers through in-class projects.

This project will allow me the materials needed to engage my students in necessary concepts to help them succeed in school.

My students will be able to understand, apply and internalize skills while at the same time enjoying learning. They will gain social skills needed to succeed in life focusing on good communication through peer-peer interaction. They will gain a vast knowledge of the world around and share what they have learned with their peers and teachers.
