Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science is all around us in the world. Instead of using textbooks, I want to have Nook tablets to use to help the students really discover science in the world around them. The students in my class are excited about technology and using new tools! Nook tablets are a great way to incorporate the two.

My students are mostly at-risk and often come from single family homes.

School is a place they feel safe and often want to be. Being that their parents aren't around (since they often work 2 or 3 jobs)they do not have a lot of experiences outside of school. School has to be a place where they can grow and have experiences with science to build background knowledge. My school is not able to provide any money for technology in the classroom. Having Nook tablets in the room opens up so many opportunities that my students have never had. They can watch science videos, read science non-fiction books, and use applications that reinforce new concepts and allow for practice of previously learned subjects. They will be able to not only learn, but to experience science in a way that will excite them and make them want to learn more.

My Project

As a teacher, I want my students to have every opportunity possible. Using Nook tablets in our class will allow my students to not only learn but become excited about science. Having them fall in love with science is a dream come true for me. There are so many opportunities that they can use their science knowledge for. As they get older, go to high school, college, and in choosing a career, they will use this knowledge to help make their lives better. Also, I think it is important that they learn how to use the technology that they will encounter later in life. These kids are growing up in a world where technology is the center of all activities. I want them to know how to use these items so that they will be on the same level as their peers.

It will allow them to discover many science concepts in a hands-on, and very exciting, way. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider donating to our classroom. My students and I are very grateful!
