Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The supplies will allow students in Mrs. Boggs's grades 7 and my students in grades 10-12 to discover and isolate phages (viruses that infect bacteria) in soil and water samples around our community. Approximately 100 students will participate in the program during their regular and elective science classes. Students could also have the opportunity to conduct novel research on phages, especially if they discover one! These supplies will be enough for 3-5 years of phage discovery. Donating to this project will allow between 300 and 500 students to participate in the program, also increasing the probability of students finding phages. If a student finds and isolates a phage, it will be new to science; the student will be able to name the phage and will be credited with the discovery. So far, three phages have been discovered by Baker students!

Note: For the past ten years, this program was supported by a grant through Montana Tech.

This grant program is now over, which is why a new source of funding is necessary. We have all of the equipment needed for the program, we just need to replace the disposable items that each student uses.
