My Students

My students find history boring and reading a chore. The historical fiction set to a graphic novel media will definitely pull in many of our kids .

My kids are in an urban public school in Wisconsin.

87% receive free or reduced lunch. In 2012, only 35% of our students were proficient or above for reading. We are struggling to make education speak to our kids, who are often looking only for where their next meal is coming or where they are sleeping that night. We have new administration which has made an impressive impact in the school climate. Previous administrations over spent and we are now working off of a deficit budget, leaving little money for anything beyond the essentials.

My Project

I am looking to support our English department through the Social Studies department's use of novels. Our students are struggling to read and I am certain that introducing the literature element through graphic novels will appear less intimidating to our students, who often quit before they give themselves the opportunity to succeed - simply because they already "know" they can't read. They have no desire to have some "stupid book" remind them of their inequities.

I want to bring history to life.

A picture is worth a thousand words, imagine what kind of an impact a graphic novel FULL of pictures can have on the lives and future academic successes of my kids. Help me bring history AND the written word to life for these kids who the world has already counted out.
