My Project

My students are budding scientists who love to explore, ask questions, and get their hands dirty in the name of learning. They are racially in the minority and come from economically challenged homes, but they arrive each day ready to dig into new discoveries with excitement and heart. They especially love science when it’s hands-on and connected to the real world around them.

This project will give them the opportunity to experience geology in action with a real rock tumbler and refill kit.

Instead of just reading about erosion, minerals, and the rock cycle, students will get to see and feel the transformation of rough stones into polished gems. They'll learn patience, attention to detail, and the scientific process in a fun, memorable way. Alongside the physical changes, they’ll track each step in journals, make predictions, and even create simple jewelry or keepsakes from their finished stones—adding a layer of creativity and pride to their learning.

This isn’t just a science activity—it’s an experience that will build confidence, spark curiosity, and show students they are capable of doing real, meaningful science. Many of my students don’t get opportunities like this at home, so your support will help them see themselves as scientists and learners who can shape the world around them.
