I teach an inner city first grade gifted and talented program which provides an early opportunity for the recognizably excelling child to begin their education on an advanced learning track. The students, though intellectually advanced as a prerequisite to entering the program, are faced with the same challenges and lack of opportunity as are all inner city school children. Music has been identified as a means to improving overall academic achievement, but for the truly gifted child the music may represent a path of its own if identified early and allowed to flourish. My students have limited or no access to musical instruments in their daily environment and may otherwise never be afforded an opportunity to ever discover their own talents. Exposure to musical instruments at this age is crucial to their academic development. Electronic keyboards can provide a gateway to learning for the motivated child. Percussion instruments allow for the natural creative expressions of innate rhythms which have no other channel through which they can be conveyed. I seek to introduce them to the George Gershwin within by simply providing them classroom access to instruments and making that a part of their daily young lives. The school's music instruction which will teach them to read notes and locate them on the keyboard will have an outlet and a place to enforce what they have learned through hands on practice. They may not all become George Gershwins. Perhaps one will, perhaps none will. But they will not risk having been born with that kind of potential and gift, with no place to have it nurtured. This program and you will provide that for them.
