My Project

Light Tables encourage the development of a wide range of skills, including fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, pre-writing skills, color recognition. We will use the light tables to explore the science of colors. These materials will give students a hands on experience that paper and screens cannot!

Literacy, music, writing, math and science are all skills that can be learned and developed using a light table!

How will this work? An adult can intentionally choose materials for children to use in the light table space: loose parts such as opaque or translucent materials, which are truly beautiful when light comes from beneath, such as colorful shapes from math pattern games. Children are free to manipulate them, talk about colors, move them about, make interesting shapes designs, tell stories when shapes/colors inspire them. Light tables are large enough for two to several children to play, encouraging cooperative play.

Best of all, with a light table, teachers can ask open ended questions supporting inquiry throughout the classroom.
