This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the best job in the world because I get to work with 4-5 year olds from diverse backgrounds in a neighborhood public school Pre-K classroom. Some of my students have never been to school before. They've been taken care of by well meaning family members but lack school readiness skills such as fine motor, socialization, basic mathematics, and exposure to science and technology. It concerns me when students arrive at my door without the age-appropriate vocabulary to express their wants and needs.

My Project

Students develop lifelong skills through hands-on learning that occurs during play. The importance of play in a Pre-K classroom can not be underestimated. When children are at the sand and water table, they are using and developing their find motor skills. These skills help them with penmanship and self-help skills such as cutting, sewing, grasping, buttoning, zippering, and pouring.

Research reports that students who have sensory issues benefit from exposure to different textures.

The sand and water are therapeutic and can de-sensitize students with hypo-sensitivity.

The students will be engaging in an activity that is extremely beneficial without even knowing they are doing work because they are having so much fun!
