My Students

I currently teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with special needs. Most of them have individualized education plans. My students have a variety of learning needs in which creating an inventive and interesting way of discovery will keep them engaged and focused. During music, they love to write their own lyrics, poems, and even improvise melodies over songs they hear. Many of them are working on taking responsibility of their own learning through their own creations in class. Music is a way for them to express their feelings, and experiences in life thus far. These classroom literacy books will allow my students to practice their literacy skills that will support them in their other core classes like English, Social studies, and Math.

Students will be able to learn music literacy in connection with english literacy and key test taking elements through these books that will help them navigate their studies with transferable skills learned.

My Project

These music activities, flashcards, and fundamental music theory books will help students relate English and Math literacy skills to music literacy. Students will learn transferable skills, from writing lyrics, to using music notes to spell out words that they will use in their own song lyrics. Using music as a tool to tell their story and self-express is needed for our students today. The Rhythm and beat flashcards will support student's financial literacy in counting numbers of rhythms and beats in a song in comparison to real-life mathematical experiences like daily spending and weekly spendings. The outcome of our project is to have students understand that music is a language that the skills used in this fun class can be transferred to their core curriculum classes like english and math.
