My Students

I am an Art teacher in a self-contained special education school. My students face challenges every day of their lives, having enough art materials in order to make beautiful projects should not be one of them. Due to budget cuts art supplies have gotten less and less.

My students all have disabilities mental and physical.

Some of them cannot read or write but they are able to express themselves through their artwork. I teach the entire school and supplies have a tendency to run out quickly. Our school is open twelve months out of the year as compared to general education schools which are open only ten months. I try to come up with new and interesting projects in order to keep them interested and captivated. I adapt materials in order to meet their physical need and disabilities and make the art experience a positive one. My students have downs syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and many other conditions.

My Project

I am requesting basic art materials like construction paper and paint that we need every day in order to continue the wonderful art projects. My students have entered many art competitions, and we would like to enter many more. I want my students to be able to express themselves for many more projects. I like to have them take home their work for their parents to see that their children are capable of beautiful work too. In general ed it is easy to produce tons of beautiful projects that the parents are fulfilled. In the case of my students the parents are hungry for work done by their children.

We do so many projects and plaster them all over the school's hallways.

Visitors are amazed at what these children are able to produce. My students range in age from eleven to twenty-one years of age. We try to make our school a colorful and inviting place for all to enjoy. There is nothing greater for a disabled child than creating something beautiful that they can be proud of, and their parents as well. Please help us to keep creating and beautifying our world.
