My Students

The students in my classes are active, hard working, eager, and love to get their hands in the dirt. My belief is that many children of this generation are not outdoors enough. In addition, many do not understand the importance of healthy food. With our gardens, both of these issues are addressed - and the best part? The kids LOVE it!

The students literally beg to use their recess to hunt for caterpillars, pick tomatoes, pull weeds, or water roses.

Because we don't have time during our busy academic day, I created an after school club called, "Hands in the Dirt Club". We meet every Monday to maintain one of our four school gardens; The Cedar, Cedar Blooms, Ronell's Rose Garden, and The Three Sisters.

Because of their efforts, all four gardens are thriving! The students have a sense of pride knowing that, together as a cohesive group, they are part of each garden's success. They not be a typical sport team, but they plan, work together, sweat, battle pests, and celebrate the triumphs! Our trophies are sunflowers, garlic, and spinach.

My Project

Every Monday the Dirt Club is hard at work. The kids gather and get their hands in the dirt to attempt to make these LMAAC gardens thrive. They pull weeds, harvest plants, and add seeds to selected areas.

The Dirt Club is very busy keeping The Three Sisters, Ronell's Rose Garden, and the Cedars clear of weeds.

Please help support the efforts to maintain these gardens with the correct tools. Daily students are willing to work in a garden, but don't have the time between periods to access the tools.

A storage container near our classroom would enable students to work during intermission as the current storage is at the other end of the campus.
