Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is 2014, and education is still dominated by paper. So often, students lost valuable learning because a notebook is lost, left at home, or damaged. Google apps allows students to keep virtual notebooks of all their notes, projects, drawings, and assignments, all in one secure place.

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

In today's world, an authentic education includes digital literacy. Students are growing up in a world where paper is used less, and computer skills are critical for success. Using the Google Apps, such as documents, forms, spreadsheets, and drawing, students can create projects, link videos to their notes, and design intricate concept mappings from their readings. All this information can be stored in their own, personal portfolio site, to be shared with parents, classmates, and other experts. However, this is not possible without access to technology. At our school, technology is scarce and fought over. Some students do not have personal devices they can bring in to use. Having several Chromebooks available in the classroom means that these students will not miss out on the opportunity to learn alongside their peers in a digital world.

With these Chromebooks, my students will not only master the curriculum and standards, but will also be building 21st Century skills.

Not only will their work be preserved throughout the year for reflection, review, and documentation, but students will carry these strong technology skills for the rest of their academic and adult lives.
