This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students are DYNAMIC! They have motivated me to "show up" daily for work and welcome them with all I have to give consistently for several years. You'd be surprised at the wisdom and intuitiveness of my PK-5th grade students. Considering the physical location of our school, a low income neighborhood in Chicago known as the "Low End", most of our students still thrive academically despite their environment.
Unfortunately, this neighborhood can have a negative effect on student behavior as well.
It is my hope that a Digital Positive Reinforcement Center can provide incentive for less classroom disruption, increase respect toward peers/staff, and decrease physical altercations.
Students will use and benefit from the Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo video games, and smart tv from it being a highly motivating and engaging resource to help students learn in a less traditional way. The specific goal for students utilizing this resource is for them to be encouraged by the acquisition of new skills, and offer salient and increasing rewards for learning and improving. There is perhaps no other context where kids are able to receive such consistent and motivating feedback. Another goal for my students is to access high levels of self-confidence and self-esteem through video games, which often develops a strong sense of mastery.
I would also like to see my students increase their level of executive functioning skills by utilizing video games to support the development of positive socialization, visual spatial skills, and healthy coping techniques. The cognitive skills of my students can also be assisted through problem solving, planning, sustaining attention, persisting through difficult challenges, and learning from past mistakes.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
