My Students

Each day, second graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop critical thinking skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide quality literature, basic school supplies, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers but all of them are eager to learn.

My Project

Did you know that Zoom fatigue is a real thing? Neither did I before teaching online. Zoom fatigue is being exhausted from being in Zoom or online meetings too long in a day. We used to not be able to pry kids off their tablets and phones but now the real luxury is to be able to "get back to basics" doing things like reading a real book. With libraries in our district still operating under COVID measures, most kids haven't gotten to read a new paper book in 6 months.

Help give my second graders a break from technology by giving them REAL books in their hands.

I have chosen titles in the Magic Treehouse series because they are a historical fiction genre for kids. I have also selected the nonfiction companions that compliment the fiction text so that students can learn more about ancient China and ancient Greece. We recently completed units of study on both, and students were fascinated by these topics. How amazed would they be to open their mail and receive actual books from YOU?!
