Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly motivated and passionate about the health field. They enjoy working with their hands and raising awareness of health conditions. Many students are also part of a health community service club - HOSA, that I also advise. They often volunteer their time and labor to assist with various health-related walks/marathons throughout the year and at the local nursing home/elderly hall. The students are eager to learn more about the human body and put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gained in the classroom.

My students are future health professionals.

They are primarily Filipino and many come from an immigrant background. The students also face financial challenges. As a teacher at a Title I school, I have seen my students have to choose between some experiences because of financial hardship. I wish to provide experiences within my classroom that will help them to achieve their goals and gain skills that they will need for their future careers.

My Project

Science fair can be a magic moment in a students career where they struggle with complex topics, develop the grit to keep going despite obstacles, and discuss their ideas in a meaningful way. It is a great way for them to meet new people, develop problem solving skills and see how science works in the real world. However, some of the data collection can be limited when heavy equipment is involved.

The neulog display will allow students to take data in a variety of environments.

They will no longer be limited to sitting next to a computer or lugging heavy equipment. They can also equip the light weight display to a variety of sensors. This will allow them to take a variety of data outside of the classroom. They can hook up ph probes, turbidity monitors or oxygen monitors to assess stream quality in real time. They can place the sensor and pack into a pocket and run while attached to an ECG and retrieve data immediately after the run. The modular nature of the equipment allows students to explore the world around them and develop their own questions to solve. This will help to remove some of the barriers when students are planning their science fair projects by providing alternative and accurate means to take their data.
