Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The newspaper club started in April 2015. Our first edition was published in black and white, with some photos downloaded from social media, or cellphones. The club is slowly increasing in numbers as students are motivated. We have plans to add pages, and having the right tools keeps their enthusiasm going.

The students come from many different backgrounds, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, and China.

They came to United States in their teens and do not speak English. Our school is a small school of about 340 students. Our mission is to provide a quality education to English Language Learners through the integration of the arts and academic subjects. The idea behind the newspaper is to develop their English language skills and help them gain confidence in their writing, at the same time, giving them a forum to express their valued opinions.

My Project

In the past, we have been using photos from social media or student cell-phones. However, our students are not allowed to use their cell-phones in school, therefore many events go unnoticed and unrecorded. A digital camera will allow students the freedom of going around, making their interviews, and documenting high school life.

After every issue, students are proud of their interviews, their reportages and their cartoons.

Having a camera available for when they need it will not only give them more freedom in choosing the events, but also the liberty of not having to rely on other people's records of the event. Not only will the photos will be of better quality, but they will also give our newspaper a more professional appearance.
