My Students

Most students come to my class with little computer competency. Computers at my school are limited and my class does not have access. We need computers so students can conduct online research and prepare for college. Our goal, one laptop per child, but for now we'll be happy with a few to share.

All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.

Our classroom library has only a few books in Spanish and no bilingual books or books in Arabic, Korean, or any of the other languages my students speak. I teach math, English, art, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning Middle School students in a high-need community. This is not a self contained classroom, over the course of a day I teach over 60 non-English speaking students (but not at the same time). Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended privates schools in their home countries, and others students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system.

My Project

With the Windows Ultimate upgrade students who know non-Latin alphabet systems, such as Japanese, will be able to write bilingual stories on the computer. My students need 1 notebook computer. As you can imagine, the uses for this notebook will be endless! Students will be taught how to use the notebook for various math, reading, science, art, and writing activities. The main use of the computer will be for students to have equal access to technology. Basic skills, such as typing, are lacking because students are not used to using computers for education. For English instruction, students will go on Quia, which is a website with games teaching grammar and reading comprehension. During writing, students will learn to type papers on the computer. Along with activities focused on math, reading, and writing, students will have opportunities to conduct Internet research for Science and Social Studies projects, use other educational websites, and create multimedia presentations.

Using the computer for these tasks will save students time, while increasing productivity and learning.

Plus they will become familiar with computer skills necessary for college. This computer will bring us closer to our goal of one computer per child. Thank you for your consideration and desire to make a difference in the lives of students! By investing in these students, you are investing in the future of America.
