Help Ms. Dean

My Students

I want to challenge my students to learn science not through a textbook and memorizing, but give them hands-on experiences to wrap the mind around.

The students in my 5th grade science class come from a rural community in Northwest Arkansas.

45-50% are free and reduced lunch candidates. Most of my students are very interested in science and hands-on activities, but they do not have the means to purchase items for classroom use.

My Project

This program will meet the learning needs of all students from the highest lever learners to those who cannot learn as well through traditional means. My gifted students become very excited by hands-on activities, and use this information to stimulate further research. They can not only identify the skeleton of the prey in the owl pellet activity, but also learn bone structure and how the skeletons of different prey differ. My students who have learning challenges do very well with this activity as well. There is nothing to be written or read during the activity, and they can learn simply by hands-on activities, then apply this to future learning.

During the ecosystem unit of owls, students will first study ecosystems and populations and the flow of energy in an ecosystem.

The activity will be an owl pellet dissection, where the students will be able to infer owl eating behaviors and preferred prey. After dissection, the students will use the bones to determine the type and quantity of prey presents in the pellet and use the information to estimate how many prey the owl could eat in one year.
