My Students

Can you imagine homes without games and activities for creative play? We would like to see our students develop, through play, traits for successful participation in group activities leading to lifelong skills and future employment.

I work in a building of 400 students, with a poverty rate of 72%.

In addition to our general education classrooms, our building serves 52 English Language Learners and 68 special education students with Individual Education Plans. The majority of our students live in low income or subsidized housing. We have many students who may be from single parent homes and/or are being raised by grandparents/extended family. In many cases students are left on their own. We serve an average of 250 breakfasts to many students who have not had food since the day before when they ate at school. The students in our building crave adult interactions and attention in a variety of school environments.

My Project

I will be able to enhance opportunities which I offer at our after school Game Club. We have discovered that many students have never played board games or used creative, imaginative, or free play materials. We are hopeful that students will learn to work cooperatively, develop respect for other people, follow rules, and problem-solve through their participation in the Game Club. The students learn to listen to other's views/ideas, take turns, think beyond the box-skills. Our students do not have the role modeling of job importance, interactive skills, and communication skills. Through the use of playing with adults and other peers at Game Club we are able to have meaningful teachable moments pertaining to those skills. We relate these skills to the idea that obtaining a job in the future is a goal for all of them. We also are able to build those mentoring relationships that our students seek out.

The broad impact for my students is to develop social skills needed to become lifelong productive, responsible citizens.

The 21st century job skills will require many more skills, than academics.
