Promoting reading in middle school is difficult. You compete with technology of all types. The formula of one class novel for everyone no longer works effectively. Middle school students are more sophisticated but still lack crucial reading comprehension and analytical skills. To encourage and engage students in the seventh grade to become life-long readers, I need differentiated novel sets. The sets I've selected offer a variety of grade level texts that are specifically targeted to engage the two genders. Using these book sets will allow me to set up literature circles, which further differentiates the learning experience. In a Socratic circle setting, the students will read engaging texts and be able to utilize accountable talk stems to analyze story elements, author intent, as well as, compare the texts to other literature, life experiences, and world events. The idea of utilizing these texts is not to divide the genders but to recognize that different students have distinct reading approaches, and the overall goal is to develop proficient readers. The additional set of poetry books will permit me to conduct half-class lessons with both genders to develop their understanding of figurative language and descriptive prose. Reading is not fundamental in middle school, but it should be! Using engaging texts that make it fun to "talk about a book" is the way to create better students and ultimately turn them into critical reasoners. I hope that you consider giving this gift of differentiated literature to my classroom so that all the students can become enhanced readers and learners. Best of all, these resources will be appreciated for years to come by future classes.
